The Big Coronation Picnic Competitions

7th May 2023

As you will be aware, the school is hosting Fenstanton Parish Council’s Big Coronation Picnic on Sunday 7th May. As part of the day, there are several competitions open to the community and to children in particular. Two of these competitions are ‘closed’ to pupils of our school only. The competitions are as follows:

  • Coronation Poetry
  • Crown-making
Both competitions will be split into the following age categories: Early Years; Years 1-3; Years 4-6. We are welcoming entries from every child in our school, including Preschool. There are no further instructions. Please create what your children think is appropriate based on the competition titles.

We very much hope that you will be interested in supporting your child to enter these competitions. Entries should be prepared and created from home, with final crowns and poems to be brought into school on the morning of Friday 5th May. The entries for all categories will then be judged, and the winning entries from each category will be displayed at The Big Picnic on Sunday 7th May. Certificates to winners will also be presented on the day, or in school afterwards in the case of non-attendance.

Along with the two competitions above, which are closed to pupils of Fenstanton and Hilton Primary School, there are also open competitions as part of the day, as follows:

  • Royal Fancy Dress (no instructions, speaks for itself)
  • Royal Cup Cakes, age up to Year 2 (Bake and decorate two cup cakes fit for a King)
  • Royal Cup Cakes, Year 3 to Year 6 (Bake and decorate four cup cakes fit for a King)
You are likely to have been made aware of these competitions through promotion by the Parish Council. Cup cakes should be brought to the event on the day. I have been asked to judge this competition so strongly encourage the children’s entries!

On the day, our PTA will be operating some of the rides and games for children, including a bouncy castle, trampolines and ‘beat the goalkeeper’. The money taken from these activities will go directly to the PTA and therefore all of it will be used to support our children in school.

The Parish Council have arranged for a commemorative coronation mug to be given to each child in the parish. Your child will receive a voucher from us in school on Friday 5th May. This can be exchanged for a mug at The Big Picnic, or at school afterwards if you are not attending the event. Please note: we have one voucher for each pupil. They will be issued to children on Friday 5th May. Please check your child has their voucher on that day to avoid lost vouchers and the subsequent disappointment. We will note children who are absent on the day, and arrange vouchers to be provided later.

We very much hope to see many of you at the event on the day and look forward to receiving entries for the poetry and crown-making competitions. It should be a great day of celebration.
