At Fenstanton and Hilton Primary School we believe that music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.
Music is taught in the classroom in EYFS and at KS1. In KS2 it is taught as part of a carousel, and in specific music sessions which happen several times each half term.
In addition, the whole school has weekly music sessions which focus on choral singing and the teaching of pitch, dynamics and tempo, as well as exposure to a range of classical musicians.
We also have regular visits from groups such as ‘Opera Hotpot’ who teach the children about a range of musical genres.
Children also have the opportunity to participate in peripatetic music lessons and extra-curricular music opportunities such as Cambridgeshire’s ‘SingFest’.
Key stage 2
Pupils are taught to sing and play musically with increasing confidence and control. They should develop an understanding of musical composition, organising and manipulating ideas within musical structures and reproducing sounds from aural memory.
Pupils are taught to:
