Y4/5 trip to West Stow
26th February 2019
In Years 4 & 5 this term, the children have been enjoying learning about the Anglo Saxons. Year4 have been looking at the Anglo Saxon way of life and Year5 have been focusing on the struggle between the Anglo Saxons and the Vikings during the 8 th and 9 th Centuries.
To enrich this topic we are planning on conducting a trip the West Stow Anglo Saxon village and Museum near Bury St Edmunds on the 26 th of February.
This reconstruction of a typical Anglo Saxon Village has been attracting visitors and school trips since it opened in the 1970s. Built on the he site of an early Anglo-Saxon village, which was occupied from AD 420-650 - over 400 years before the Norman Conquest. Visitors can experience life and it would have been during the Anglo Saxon times, dress up as an Anglo Saxon and explore the range of artefacts and exhibits on offer.
We intend to leave school by coach at approx. 9:15 am, arriving there about 10:15am and leaving at 2:00pm to return to return back to school hopefully by 3:00pm. The children would need a packed lunch and may bring up to £5.00 in a named envelope to buy gifts from their shop. The visit will also include an educational talk and handling of museum artefacts with one of the West Stow staff, as well as an activity around the village where children will find out more about Anglo Saxon life. These experiences will supplement our History curriculum.
We appreciate this trip is expensive one and the second of the year for year 4 but the village and museum is highly recommended and we believe it is worth the money for the experience which the children will receive. The total cost of £11.00 per pupil will include coach travel to and from West Stow, insurance, entry into the village, museum and the educational talk and activity.
We are asking for the payment by Friday 15th February. If we do not have sufficient interest to make the trip worthwhile, we will make our cancellation before we incur cancellation charges so that in that instance, all monies would be returned. I realise this is short notice, however, due to my recent paternity leave and family issues this letter is going out much later than originally planned, for which I apologise.
