Y3 trip to Paxton Pits
2nd July 2019
On Tuesday 2nd July we are hoping to take the year 3 children to Paxton Pits Nature Reserve for the day. We have visited the reserve several times in the past and enjoyed an interesting and rewarding day where children are actively exploring different habitats.
The children will have the opportunity to pond dip to find the creatures that have come to live in the pits created by gravel extraction. They will sweep-net to discover mini beasts in the meadow.
Children will also travel back in time to discover how Paxton Pits was once a very different habitat. Using clues in kit -bags they will discover why an Ichthyosaur was living at the site of the reserve millions of years ago. There will also be an opportunity for mini beast hunting and birdwatching with binoculars at the bird hide to discover just why Paxton Pits is well- known for its amazing birdlife today. Finally, the children will look at how, in the future, Paxton Pits will become three times as big with some new wildlife habitats.
Children should come with a waterproof jacket, Wellington boots if wet, or strong shoes (trainers are ideal), long trousers and a jumper if necessary. In warm weather, children should still wear long sleeves such as a shirt and long trousers. Paxton Pits is a very open site so a sun hat and sun cream are essential. For health and safety reasons, Paxton Pits have advised us that children who are unsuitably clothed will not be taken out with the group. Only very wet weather halts proceedings so if it rains we will still be outside for most of the day.
All pupils should bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink in hot weather. Please inform school, in advance of your visit, of any allergy issues or other medical issues that may be relevant to the day. Please ensure that all open cuts on hands are covered. This is a protection against Weil’s disease, a rare water-borne disease. There is no gift shop so no money is required on the day.
We intend to leave school by coach at approx. 9:15 am, arriving there about 10:00am and leaving at 2.30pm. The total cost of £15.15 per pupil will include coach travel to and from Paxton Pits, insurance and the group being led by two of the nature reserve education team. We are asking for the payment by Monday 24th June. If we do not have sufficient interest to make the trip worthwhile, we will have to cancel.
Please pay using SIMS Pay (online payment system) or if necessary by cheque payable to Cambs CC. Permission is required, please complete the google form link Y3 trip to Paxton Pits. If your child won’t be going due to absence please indicate via the form or advise us separately.
