This is Nick Williams second visit to Fenstanton & Hilton Primary School. He brought along a fascinating collection of wildlife photographs taken all over the country. Each photograph had a wonderful story behind it. Our children were able to demonstrate their extensive knowledge on the subject by answering his questions. This earned them stickers, photographs and even a calendar.
Year 5/6 Technology Day - December 2008Structures and BridgesWe welcomed Professor Harry Marsh to our school. He worked with the Year 6 pupilsmaking strong structures from paper and acetate tubes. Together we built part of a structure which is based on the Mathematical Bridge at Queen's College and will form a large wheel which will be displayed in St Michaels Church on Trinity Street in Cambridge. This is to commemorate the work of Charles Darwin. Children from many schools in the area have made parts of it and it will be put together in March.
We also made other 3D shapes from the tubes including tetrahedrons, decahedrons and octohedrons. One of them was big enough to fit a small child inside. ![]() While we were busy doing that, the year 5's were also investigating structures, making testing bridges and working together. One child said that this was the 'best day ever' and they liked working with lots of different people.
![]() Year 5/6On Friday 17th October 2008 Year 5/6 had a strict school experience. A wonderfully Victorian group of children arrived at school in their bonnets and waistcoats! They met with the formidable Mr Grey who enlightened the children to the realities of a Victorian school day. They got to write with real ink (which didn't come off for days!) and sit Victorian style. In the afternoon Mr Grey became Phil to the children as they worked as historians examining artefacts from the period to draw their own conclusions. A super day which made the children appreciate their own school lives a little more. Year 1/2On Monday 6th October Year 1/2 were visted by a very special historical person. FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE!She came to visit to explain to the children all about her life and times in Scutari Hospital. They made sashes, pillboxes, semaphore bats, lockets, medals, owls and diaries to name but a few. A wonderful day was had by all. It was a super learning experience which brought the history they had been learning about to life. ![]() ![]()
