School History
The history of Fenstanton & Hilton Primary School goes back as far as 1847 when the Lord of the Manor gave a piece of land to the church for a school for the poor children of Fenstanton and a house for the ‘headmaster’. The money for the building came from donations from the church and villagers. For some years the ‘old school’ (now known as the Church Centre), was rented from the church commissioners by the County Council for use as Fenstanton Council School. In 1939, there were 71 children registered in the school and in 1943 there were 111 children registered in the school including 11 evacuees.
The village grew and 41 children from Hilton were transported to Fenstanton school in 1956 when their school building was considered too small and in a bad state of repair. Subsequently the County Council bought the piece of land opposite the ‘old school’ and a new school was built. The outdoor swimming pool was built by the PTA in 1968 with money donated by local businesses and PTA funds. Prime Minister, John Major, together with every child and member of staff in the school planted the trees along the boundary of the playing field in 1996. Fenstanton Council School became Fenstanton County Primary School and then recently Fenstanton & Hilton Primary School. The new school was built in three stages as and when the two villages increased in size.
The school continued to grow and for some years there were two temporary classrooms in use. In 2009 the school had 2 new classrooms built to replace the temporary buildings and these are now used by the reception children. The classrooms were built over the old swimming pool and the work included an extension to the staffroom. The new 'build' was formally opened by England ladies cricket captain Charlotte Edwards.
