Fen Drayton Nature Reserve
Oak, Elm and Birch go wild at Fen Drayton!
What a great couple of days we had at Fen Drayton Nature Reserve last week. The weather was relatively kind to us, a mixture of sunshine, showers and wind....... a typical British summer! Activities were led by very capable and interesting RSPB field teachers who guided us in groups between lake dipping, insect and bug hunting along with all manner of different sensory searches.
The children were totally immersed in nature for the day and spotted some amazing wildlife including; nursery web spiders that carry their eggs around with them, the stripy caterpillars of the cinnabar moth, lovely leeches, damselfly nymphs, diving beetles and pond snails. The list was endless and amazingly contained such wonders as whales and kingfishers by the dozen! An added bonus was the sighting of the rare, but becoming increasingly common, Guided Bus zooming past!
The children were a credit to the school with their excellent behaviour and engagement in their learning. Thank you to the parents who enabled the trip to happen and by supplying such waste free packed lunches.... we hardly had any non-recyclable or compostable waste at all! Our relationship with RSPB Fen Drayton Lakes continues to provide access to a wealth of experiences and enhancement to our curriculum, some of these activities will be led by the RSPB staff over the summer so why not take your children along for some more fun sessions of whale spotting!
