| School Work - Year 3/4 |
Autumn term 2007LiteracyWe began the term with a wonderful Literacy week. The theme was imagined worlds and we shared stories such as: The magic faraway tree, The Witches, The lion, the witch and the wardrobe, The Borrowers, Alice in Wonderland and others. We used drama, video, objects and extracts from stories to inspire and motivate the children. We were also lucky enough to have a poet visit and an author to share their work and experiences. At the end of the week, we had a Mad Hatters tea party in Year 3/4. We made hats, food and all got dressed up for the occasion.GeographyIn Geography, we studied our locality. The children enjoyed finding out what Fenstanton and Hilton were like in the past. To deepen the children’s understanding, we invited guest speakers into school to talk to them about what life was like in the villages in the 1940s and 50s. We also spent some time walking around Fenstanton looking at services and involved the children in conducting a survey. Design TechnologyWe spent some time looking at mechanisms and in groups the children designed and made their own pop-up books. Some children, who had designed books for younger children, enjoyed going down to the infants to share their books.MusicWe had lots of fun this term, rehearsing and performing songs for ‘Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. There were lots of words to learn and tricky parts to some songs but we produced a fantastic performance.
Spring term 2008HistoryWe all enjoyed a fabulous ‘History Week’, where we found out all about John Howland and the Pilgrims voyage to New England. The week gave the children the opportunity to find out about some local history and we encouraged them to act like real historians. They examined artefacts, were involved in research, asking questions, conducting research and presenting their ideas. We combined many subjects in with the history such as art, music, geography, DT, cooking and also literacy.FrenchWe began learning French in Year 3/4. First of all, we did mini-projects on French speaking countries and then we began to learn the language.
Summer term 2008P.E / SwimmingAs part of their PE lessons, the children in Year 3/4 all had swimming lessons at the St Ivo Recreation Centre this term. Each child had the chance to achieve a distance certificate and some more able swimmers did some personal survival lessons. Year 4 Athletics day. We took the Year 4 children to Cambridge for a special Athletics day with all schools from the county. We had a fantastic day and were very proud when one of our groups won the award for the best team spirit, behaviour and attitude. HistoryMany of the children were fascinated by our history topic on World War Two. We used a range of sources to find out about what happened, why and the effects it had on people and Britain as a whole. To bring our topic to life, we visited Duxford Imperial War Museum for a special World War Two day. We all dressed up, took part in different workshops and examined the various exhibits. The children (teachers and helpers) all had a fabulous day.R.E.As part of our R.E studies we visited the church of Saint Peter and St Paul in Fenstanton, to find out more about Christian symbols. We continued our work on symbols back in the classroom, talking about their meaning and then designing our own kneelers for the church. We also practised our sewing skills by sewing little samplers with a Christian symbol of our choice.DTWe had great fun this term, designing and making puppets. Each child made their very own stick puppet. We then used the stick puppets for conversations during French and wrote plays especially for the puppets, which were performed in front of classes and some at the Talent Show.
