RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch
Birdwath update:
On a chilly Tuesday afternoon last week our intrepid Eco-Warriors braved the cold to help complete the Nationwide RSPB bird survey. Mrs Barber set up a makeshift bird hide and Mrs Lee scattered bird seed near by and the children watched and waited quietly for the birds to come. We were not disappointed as just 2 minutes into our watch two beautiful blue tits landed right near by our hide. After that we crept to the field and saw so many kinds of birds it was amazing. Using binoculars we were able to identify 13 different varieties! The children had to mark off a recording sheet how many of each variety we could see. You can see the results of our watch below in the bar chart. We hope to do a few more bird watches at different times of the day and year to see if there is a change in what we see.

Fenstanton and Hilton Eco-Warriors (FHEW) are hoping to take part in this annual event organised by the RSPB to monitor garden birds nationwide.
Some time in the next few weeks FHEW will be observing our feathery friends in a chosen spot in the school grounds for an hour and passing that information onto the RSPB along with schools all over the country. You can join in at home by doing your own birdwatch for an hour over the weekend of 28th/29th January and submitting the results online. Remember that birds also need food year round but especially in the cold winter months so you could make it an opportunity to help your children put up a few simple feeders in your garden, homemade fat balls are very popular with the birds and are cheap and easy to make. Then sit back and enjoy the spectacle!
